RTW Videoblog #7: Sex Workers in St. Petersburg

In my endless search for fascinating film topics to shoot for Current TV (http://www.worldlifilm.com), I found myself walking the streets of suburban St. Petersburg with several local prostitutes. Following my social worker friends, I was able to learn about a serial attacker that has been terrorizing these women, as well as trying to understand a bit more as to what its like to be a prostitute in Russia.

I'm exhausted, but loving these opportunities to see parts of the world that not even locals get to see. This is why I travel! Even if I miss out on more traditional traveller stops, I am accumulating these experiences that are changing me forever.

@alcochollocaust , stupid,,, free med, free education did existed even in the North Europe in 70-90s - in Sweden, Finland, Norway,Denmark..U dont need any 'socialism' to get free medicin etc..Now its not free in Scandinavia, but still very cheap..As for drugs -it IS existed even in the USSR..U can ask ANY elder russian..u can even Google to narkomaniya v SSSR and u get lots of info from ex-soviet ppl

@alcochollocaust , this is lie,,prostitution did existed even before perestroyka,,but qt that time it was undeground.I have seen hookers in Leningrad near railway stations,bars and restaurantds etc.in the end of 70s,.There were even so called valute-prostitutes, who were working in the night-clubs for the western foreigners..First time Komsomolskaya Pravda wrote about prostitutes seling sex to american diplomats.,in the 60s !!.Prostitution did EXISTED in the USSR

@alcochollocaust ,ur stupid propaganda wont help u..its not 'other cultures',Its about MY own culture,I was born in the USSR, lived there 17 years and i have seen lots of different kinds prostitutes from hookers to the high standarts so called 'valute-prostitutes' and i know what im talking about...

@lamOmeIo yes, existed, but not in such vast proportions. clubs did not exist officially in USSSR. it's a fact every international hotel had a bar with music -only for foreigners. Certain ladies could get there by bribing the security. We are not talking about mass prostitution as in Oakland, or San Francisco, California where I also lived and saw it with my own eyes

I repeat: I live on the street mentioned in the video. I see it every God damn day. the guy in the video is a liar. that is all.

@lamOmeIo my friend's father left Russia in early 90's. he now lives in Switzerland. now he goes back to Russia a few times a year just to visit doctors. Russian paid clinics. he avoids his EUROPEAN insurance in order to get GOOD and AFFORABLE dental work. and he is not stupid. in fact he is a scientist who fled to Europe from Russia in early 90's when Russian democrats using western money turned a good country into poverty ridden dessert with @glasnost” and freedom bananza.
