Every year my parents make me go to this work party, well more like ball, with them. It's boring, and there are never any teenagers my age, seventeen, except well my best friend, Ray. He's been my best friend since we met when we were like four.
See, our parents are surgeons. Both of our parents did their residency at the same hospital, and we were both left at daycare. We played, and became best friends.
Anyways, we have to attend this ball for our parents. It's a black tie event, so guys have to wear suits, and lady's have to wear dresses. I'm wearing a short half black and half white dress with a sweetheart neckline, with my black jimmy choo ballerina flats, and my heart shaped necklace that Ray gave me for my birthday.
I sat down thirty minutes into the party, I was bored, and Ray wasn't here yet. There was music playing, but no one dancing except the little kids. The adults were just mingling off to the side. I feel someone tap my shoulder, and I turned around to see Ray in his suit.
"Hey, Lia, care to dance?" he asked me, and I just nodded my head.
"But I don't know how to dance," I laugh.
"Let me lead," he takes my hands. "I'll teach you to dance,"
He walks me to the middle of the dance floor, my heart starts racing. I've had the biggest crush on him for a couple years now, but I don't have the guts to admit it to him. He has never showed any sign of wanting to be more with me, so I guess he doesn't like me like that.
Moves like Jagger by Maroon 5 was playing, and he was just spinning me, and we were dancing silly. We laughed, and we were acting like best friends.
A slow song came on, and I started to pull him back to the table, but he wouldn't budge.
"Let's dance this one," he suggests.
"I don't know," I was unsure.
"Give it a try, you can step on my feet, it'll be alright," I laughed, and went closer to him.
He pulled me close, and wrapped his arms around my waist, and I put my arms around his neck. He led me, and I kind of kept stepping on his feet, and I kept laughing.
I put my head on his chest, and I was able to hear his heartbeat. The room had gotten quiet, no one was talking. All eyes were on me, and him. On us.
"I like you, Lia," I hear him whisper in my ear.
I lifted my head, and looked at him.
"Like as in what?"
"Like as in I'd like you to be my girlfriend," I couldn't believe my ears, my best friend had feelings for me, and I couldn't be happier.
"Are you asking me to be your girlfriend?" I ask.
"Yes," He reached into his coat, and took out a single rose. Ray handed it to me.
"I'd love to," I smile, and kiss him softly, he returned the kiss. Everyone was cheering.
We got married when we were twenty five, and the song we danced to at the ball, we danced at our wedding. Every time we hear it on the radio, he whispers in my ear, "Do you hear that love? They're playing our song,"
We had a little girl, and a boy, twins, two years later, and we couldn't be any happier. It's all about us, and it's a feeling I never felt until that night, and I never stop having that feeling. I married my true love, and my best friend.
