A song I wrote to mourn a terribly sad thing that happened recently. Here is the item that prompted it:

"Four U.S. troops were killed Sunday at a remote checkpoint in southern Afghanistan when a member of the Afghan security forces opened fire on them, military officials said. The attack brought to 51 the number of international troops shot dead by their Afghan partners this year. The insider attack came on the same day that NATO warplanes killed nine women gathering firewood in the mountains outside their village in an eastern province, according to local officials."  --Washington Post, via Peter Hart at www.fair.org

("Collateral damage" is a nonsense phrase that should be avoided by every truth-respecting person. These are tragedies, and there have been many them, and they are completely unnecessary, and they must end.)

--------------------------------------------------

Here are the words:

Nine women
Out gathering firewood
They're dead
After gathering firewood
They were living their life
They were getting some wood

Nine women gathering firewood
Gathering stuff to burn

Wanting to make some food

Nine women gathering firewood
Are dead
For their pains

They're dead

They were alive

They're dead
For gathering firewood

Wanting to make some food
To make some dinner
For their families
That's what they were doing

Nine women
They're dead
For no, absolutely no reason

This is wrong
This is wrong
This must stop
This must end

Nine women
Gathering firewood

Nine women
Gathering firewood
