A very simple but fast bristlebot.

Some hints if you want to make one yourself:
We simply cut the head from a toothbrush (soft bristles), put it into water for a while and left it to dry overnight on a table, bristles down. A book on the left and one on the right side were holding it upright and another one across on top was exerting a small preasure in order to get the bristles bent as you can see at 0:12. This adds a lot of forward thrust.

We glued the motor and some very simple battery holding stuff (half a paper clip and the thing which I found in the basement which pinches the battery like a pair of tweezers). This turned out great in that the battery can be fixed now very tight and in different positions which is essential to going in "straight" lines. If the bot goes in circles you just shift the battery (i.e. the most heavy part) a bit to the side to correct for it.

Battery is a type 357 watch battery with 1.55 V and the motor is from my old Siemens C35 mobile phone.

  • where did you get motors that small?

  • @theonelinerkid

It's the vibrational alarm motor from an old cell phone.

  • how do you make this ?

  • @SuperMario64N64

Take a look at the video by the Evil Mad Scientists -

search for Bristle Bot Evil Mad on youtube.

  • Did you do anything special to prevent tipping? I'm noticing it stays upright much better than the others I've seen.

  • @turnbolt11 thanks for the comment. We did nothing special, just tried to align everything smoothly along the middle axis. Maybe it's the type of toothbrush or the fact that we bent the bristles a little while they were wet - as written in the description. It was simply our lucky first (and only so far) go at this type of robot after coming across the evil mad scientist's how-to.
