if your fish isn't making a bubble nest its okay, it just means he's not ready to mate yet!

no it just needs to be healthy but not all healthy bettas make bubble nests

does a male beta have to be next to a female beta, for the male to make a bubble nest?

A betta fish makes a bubblenest when it is healthy (females will not do it,although I have seen some do it) so unhappy ones may not make bubblenests.

It isnt a problem if your betta doesnt build a bubblenest. It is only needed if you want it to spawn. If you want it to make a bubble nest best thing is to feed ur betta bloodworms and a variety of other foods. Pellets and Flakes won't do very well.
