A Project for school. Monologue written and performed by yours truly.
DESCRIPTION OF MONOLOGUE!
The point of this monologue was to analyze the character of Myrtle Wilson. She is a person who, in my opinion, is pretending to play the part of a high society broad in order to live in the fantasy that Tom is hers. She puts on this haughty persona to make herself feel better, and to forget that she really has nothing in Ash Town and in George. The monologue is set right before her death, and the car crash. But, it reveals her insecurities, the side of Myrtle we dont really see in the novel. But, yet again, she tries to convince herself of what isnt true. The pauses are a tactic I stole from Harold Pinter, seeming to add a second character to the overall tone. The silent character reveals the truth that Myrtle doesnt wish to admit to herself. The reference to those people reveals Myrtles elitist feelings when she talked of the ice boy in Chapter two, remarking that you have to keep after [these people] to get what you want. Her rant on the Apartment, the dresses, the dog, and Catherine reveals her skewed sense of hierarchy. Her things are more important to her than her own family, and her whole life has been about getting ahead after her ultimate disappointment with George. One can infer that Myrtle realizes that Tom is not truly in love with her by the way he treats her. As noted in the monologue, he basically calls her a b*tch, and slaps her when she says Daisys name one too many times. He doesnt respect Myrtle, and Myrtle so desperately seeks his approval to make their relationship more concrete. The final sentence/questions are an allusion to the New York apartment. As stated in the book, Nick notices that the furniture is too large as compared to the smaller size of the apartment. The questions speak to a deeper level: was her exterior/beauty/person not big or good enough for Tom? Or were her dreams/lavishness too big and too ambitious?
