Pledge of allegiance, plastic brains and panic! Hosted by Rob Sherman, president of the Illinois Chapter of American Atheists. The guest here is Scott Marshall, co-program director of the then mostly punk and noise-oriented WZRD-FM "the wizard" out of Northeastern Illinois University. This is an excerpt of one of fifteen Illinois Atheist Forum episodes directed by Scott Sanders. Operating the cameras is Paul Rosen. This was recorded in 1986 - well before the murder of the O'Hair family - at the Buffalo Grove, Illinois public access studio and cablecast in many northwest Chicago suburbs. Guest Scott Marshall's credits since include sound collage work for Woody Allen. Sherman currently has a radio show in Chicago and is still probably Illinois' best known atheist.

  • Under God was added to the pledge of allegiance in 1954. It was added by congress after the Knights Of Columbus campaigned for it. So, it hasn't been for over a hundred years, and the grand daughter of Francis Bellamy said her grandfather would have rejected it, and he was a babtist Minister.

  • Actually, our main founding fathers, thomas Jefferson, etc. were Diests, which means that they believed that there was a god, and he did create the world, but he was like a watchmaker, he made the universe and then did not interfere. So religion was not the main part of OUR country, it was the basis of the colonies, not our country.

  • I have difficulty masturbating to this video.

  • wow, still sounds lame. I think of naked chicks when I "pledge my allegiance" to the flag (if you know what I mean)

  • @pyrotek56 You should've been expelled. America was created for Christians by Christians. Go live in Russia, North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, France, Sweden, Canada, or some other commie socialist lib shithole country if you don't like it, KOMRADE!

  • Forget about "under God," I'm against the pledge from line 1. I don't pledge my allegiance to any FLAG, especially when it's just based on the accident of my birth. Giving your ALLEGIANCE to a flag is silly. You should always remain independent of mind and allow youself to align only with that which you choose to support.

  • Do scientific discoveries and knowledge cause such a scientist to conclude that matter, unknowing and unperceiving, is his creator and that of all beings?

  • Actually the original pledge didnt have any religous statements in it. The pledge to me is a statement of patriotism, something i am big into.

  • what was written on you t shirt? Did they suspend you for just having the word "atheist" on a shirt?

  • Good for you thinking things through for yourself and having respect for the fact the USA is the only country in the world to separate church and state, An important reason to be proud of your country

  • Good. Each look you get is a sign that you've raised awareness that not everyone buys the bull of the bible.

  • Why even have a pledge of allegiance? Is it not a sort of religious-ish statement to make to a symbol that represents an ideal? I vote no to any kind of indoctrination! Thats freedom, thats fair!
