How Netflix knows what videos you will like. A reply to a blog post by film critic Amy Biancolli of the Houston Chronicle's entertainment blog, Peep. Explains, at a "no previous experience required" level, the method that Netflix uses to select video recommendations, collaborative filtering.

    It's certainly true that recommendations based on analytics - known as recommendation engines - have been around for some time. Netflix did not originate the concept. Yet they have obtained patents, so at least in the eyes of the US Patent and Trademark Office, some elements of their process are novel.

    I have worked with many retailers who improved sales with analytics techniques - not limited to the method described in this video. Their data is not mine to share in public, though.

  • @AnalyticsVideo I hate Wayne State, its the worst school in the country (legitimately). I am transferring to the University of Michigan. A real university.
