Field Herping: April 9, 2009

This is our first field herping movie of the season. We went on April 9, 2009 to Stone Mountain and we saw some really cool stuff including northern water snakes, anoles, skinks, turtles, etc. Hope you like it.

Are water snake poisonous?

@NerdFlavoredCondom No. First off, snakes are typically venomous, not poisonous. There is one individual that has been described as poisonous (Rhabdophis tigrinus) but otherwise, toxic snakes INJECT digestive enzymes actively, while poisonous animals have to have their compounds ingested somehow. Watersnakes are members of the family colubridae a family which is, for the most part, non-venomous, though there a few exceptions.

I live about 4 minutes from stone montain. Where in the park where you guys going to find the snakes?

@shlokda we found the snakes more or less around the lake @ the Carillon and @ the big pond that's near the side of the road.
