The Midnight Shepherd
By Terry Lynch
In a little country town
'Neath the towering oaks
There lived an old man
With his best friend and pal,
A dog black as the night
With crystalline brown eyes,
A double coat shiny as silk,
And more courage than any mortal,
Least that's the impression he gave
To any who might trespass,
Be they feline, squirrel or man.
They lived and traveled far and wide,
Old man and Midnight shepherd,
Sharing good and bad times,
Carrying each other through.
But the old man knew the end time was near,
And when it came he dug a grave,
Planted a tree where Midnight lay,
That every spring sweet memories might blossom.
Though passing brings tears,
Still howling can be heard
'Neath the oak and dogwood, full moon above!
All good dogs go to Heaven
There to play and await
By Rainbow Bridge that fateful day
When in the distance is seen
And upon the breeze a memory.
Hark, it's the one I've been
Watching for come now
To join me in the light
That together we will be
Free to roam eternity!
Yes, all good dogs go to Heaven
-- And their masters, too.
This poem, Midnight Shepherd: All Good Dogs Go To Heaven, was inspired by Bahnbrecher Jade von Talhaus, of Quitman, Mississippi, who died early Thursday morning, Feb. 12, 2009. Visit Jades homepage at http://www.byteland.org/projectk9/jadelogo.htm
Jade (Pronounced Yada) would have been 84 years old in people years on March 6th. Jade was a solid black AKC registered German Shepherd breed by Lynda Montgomery of Cave Creek, Arizona, and owned by Terry Lynch, who moved to Quitman in 2004. Jade served as a canine model, mascot and guide dog on the Internet for Project K-9. Jade's photograph was featured on over two dozen unique gift and apparel designs and on over 70 products. Jade's paw print appeared on over 170 dog fancier designs with popular slogans, including "The Canine Blessing" and "Dog Is God Spelled Backwards." As mascot for Project K-9, an all breed on-line educational and information resource, Jade helped guide hundreds of people in cyberspace, providing information about training your dog, traveling with your dog, and such canine diseases as lymphoma. A tribute to Jade is posted on the Internet at www.byteland.org/projectk9/jadelogo.htm.
Jade was a great dog and a very loyal companion! He was a very alert dog and is attributed with saving the life of La Faye S. Lynch of Montgomery, Alabama, in August of 2003. When Mrs. Lynch became ill and unconscious, Jade alerted his master, that she could be rushed to the hospital. Jade was much loved and will be sorely missed. Jade lived a good and long life and was a loyal companion to the very end. He did not suffer and has gone to that great dog house in the sky to await his master at Rainbow Bridge just outside the pearly gates of Heaven.
Project K-9 will be looking for a new German Shepherd to train as a therapy dog to work with the elderly and those who are physically or mentally challenged. If you are a breeder and are interested in making donation of a healthy GSD, please contact Terry at terrylynch@aol.com.
