So how does this mean that a word record was attempted? It looks like just a bunch of people grouped together spinning fire. Staff poi and snakes. How is his a world record? What did they do?

Well, the world record for "the most people spinning fire together at the same time" was set by about 200 or so people in the UK... in Karlsruhe there have been only about 110... meaning that they didn't break the record - yet it was a much better choreography (IMHO) :o)
