The religious right is always saying that the USA is a "christian nation" .The Declaration Of Independence has the word "creator" in it, however it isn't a legal document. The Constiution in Article 6, last paragraph says "no religious test for office...",and don't forget Amendment 1, no "establishment of religion", it is a legal document. The Treaty of Tripoli 1796, which by the way President Adams signed, Article 11 states that the United States isn't a "christian nation", it is a legal document. It doesn't matter what the Framers wrote in their private papers they are not legal documents, the Constitution was written "secular" for a reason, they didn't want all the baggage of religion that Europe had to deal with, and church meddling.
