Yep and all the old TOTP gawn forever. Bastards!
-
@jutescrim If you've got a bunch of Pete and Dud audio tapes I'd be more than happy to transfer them to CDs!
-
@jutescrim Steptoe was wiped as well! The series from 1963 to 1965 survives as16mm telerecordings (fim recordings). The 405 vt master tapes have long been wiped. The two colour series from 1970 survive as open reel skip field early domesticsd videotapes madew for dalton and Simpson.

@BelatedCommiseration Well we would still have the audio tapes - many were copiled onto LPs - I have a few. I also recall that many of the sketches were played on Radio 1's "Fun at 1" spot in the mid 1970's, so they must exist.
However I don't know where they all are. Anyone fancy the job of assembling them onto CDs?
-
@dolphin8b I think the reason for the wiping was far more sinister cf TW3 which was axed by the BBc (possibly due to the McMillan sketch)
Other comedy shows of the period have been saved from the beginning eg Steptoe & Son 1963+

Does anyone remember the sketch where Dudley Moore (who plays a Welsg music teacher) is cajoled into treaching Peter Cook to play Beethoven for his wife's birthday. It may only be an audio.
In any case if anyone has this please download onto you tube - it is excellent hearing

Videotape in the 1960's was used as an "as live" format. due to rights issues and the desire of the audience to see "fresh" shows programmes where wiped after 2 to 6 years on average. However shows where telercorded to film for overseas sale. This is a film copy. What is the point of retaining tapes of shows you can never repeat due to rights issues? So the 1960's logic goes. Colour comes along in 1967-1969 and b/w shows on death row.

Hello BBC!
This is a shame! As FreeknNasty said you did "wiped out a huge piece of comedy history. What's next? Python?"
Yak!
-
BBC should be sued by the public.
Such neglect is gross and unforgiveable.
I don't see how these idiots keep in business!
-
Luckily the Python tapes were stolen by Terry Jones and copied because the BBC were going to wipe the 1st series. I thought this was old news to everyone. The BBC (and just about everyone else ever) wiped half of the stuff they ever aired. There are about 100 missing Doctor Whos!
Unbelievable. No procedure to accomodate him so they just wiped out a huge piece of comedy history. What's next? Python?
It's odd because the BBC produces the best comedy in the world. Sigh.

I was listening to the audio on Peter Cook's site and they said that the BBC had wiped all copies of this show because it was on 'video' which is a re-usable resource. Apparently even Peter Cook was not able to get a copy before they wiped them. You have to wonder how dumb some people are.
