Johann Joseph Fux
Capricio & fugue
Dorota Cybulska

Fux is perhaps less known for his music than as the author of the very famous counterpoint treatese "Gradus ad parnassum".

This book by a baroque composer, written in form of a dialog between a master and his student, tries to explain Fux's views about Renaissance counterpoint.
As such it has been criticisized, since such an ideal set of "rules" can't resist an examination of the music written by so many Renaissance composers, each of them with his own style.

But this books has been, for a long time, a good basis to start studying counterpoint, and some personal notes have been found, written by... Beethoven's hand !

  • Nice. The problem with J. Fux's "Gradus ad Parnassum" is that, today, such textbook could be confusing for music students who think they are studying the "rules of counterpoint", while in practice the "strict" styles of Palestrina, Fux, Bach, Mozart, etc., differ widely in conceptions... and "rules". We are lucky today since we can study a specific style/period and understand that.

  • Sure, you are right, this kind of book must be studied and understood with its context present to our mind.

  • Fux is kinda a badass

  • A strange opinion...

  • u play piano n study everything all day n it all lead back to his book thinking helps too

  • Simply delightful listening .

  • Fux's music is very unorthodox, sometimes. He's a very intesting composer, a bit like Carlos Seixas in Harphiscord.

  • lol
