Dreadful for classical music. I'm wondering if you ever heard some Decca or DG recording...

stumbled upon this vid by accident. couldn't resist: this may fly for pop/jazz, etc. but you never do this, if you're recording classical music. somebody noted that spaced pair sounds best - that's 'cause pure phase stereo almost always wins against "intensity only" (XY), which we probably wouldn't know at all, if it weren't for that era when we had to ensure stereo-to-mono compatibility (no phase issues, as stated, so no losses when stereo is converted into mono when using XY only).

Spaced pair is my preference. The other two methods have some level of phase canceling to enhance the stereo. If it doesn't sound cohesive enough bring the pairs closer. A center mic in addition is sometimes helpful also.
