But in the end, we all figured out that the US Government and the cops like a serious "divide and conquer" situation. By 18 we all knew each other, and the Mexicans fought each other and the black gangs, and we just fought whichever asshole was looking for it, out in the beach areas. Sometimes we fought- sometimes we fought the San Diego Police department. We were Irish and Jew, dago and whatever- and mexicans and blacks. Different place. Different time.

Some of our guys were bigots- or espoused themselves as bigots- but honestly they were the hardest guys in the bunch- and even they didn't let it get in the way of our collective survival.

"Being "white" in a "puerto Rican" neighborhood? Serious? We grew up on the border of Mexico- we had best friends when we were kids who were Mexican- the system had us fighting them at 12-13-14-

Being from a beach gang in Southern California from 1980- we never brought our personal politics into it as far as who was with us- if someone was a bigot, we didn't let that foreshadow the well being of the neighborhood, the collective and above all our ability to make money.

As soon as that (to be generous) stereotypical meathead said "White Power" and the other (to be generous) stereotypical meathead said "keep it white" you lost the rest of the world- and me. I empathize- I understand- I am no stranger to violence- but White power skins are just confused, easily led fuckheads.
