Taken from our Woodsmaster volume 4 DVD. This is part one of a navigation series taken from the Hoods Woods Video on Primitive Navigation. The actual video covers many more topics than what is presented here. Filmed in 1998

  • There is a slighly easier way to tell your bearing by the sun if you have a watch. In the northern hemisphere, point the hour hand at the sun and bisect the angle between this bearing and where 12 o'clock is. There's your north. Maybe even quicker too. Reverse this for the southern hemisphere. Warning. Do not try this with LED watches or heavy grandfather clocks.

  • Roger that, we show it in the video too. If you have an LED watch just draw the watch face on a piece of paper, bark etc with the correct time indicated and the watch/time method still works. You can also use a radio with local time to give directions.

I agree with that grandfather clock! Mine is only correct twice a day.

  • Of course, we need to remember that there are two possibilities for a northern direction at any one time. (depending on how you move the board, the shadow can touch the line in two places; namely two spots equally far from the center on both the western and eastern half) so let's just remember that from morning till noon the shadow has to touch the line on the western half and from noon till sunset it has to touch the line on the eastern half.

Ask a professional before using this :D

  • First off, I was taking up for corellmekageme who you were ridiculing for his statement. estaban215 gave critisizim with belittling him. Secondly I know the edibles in the areas I camp and hike. How about instead of critizing be constructive and give helpful advise. And lastly I apologize for calling you an Ass.

  • sorry if i hurt your feelings,it wasn't meant to be malicious or nit picky but i do think that if it was a real survival situation and if that is the only way you plan on judging what is safe to eat,i do think there is a very good chance it would end badly.I really meant what i said that i hope you look into other means of getting food.

  • Nit-picking a poor guy's comment and calling him a deadman that really helps give him constructive advice.

  • schlong- I am not a name caller but i hope you look into other means of getting food.

  • you're also an ass.

  • Ahhhh ! So thats what the awl is on the swiss knife.

  • corellme-we got a dead man, dead man typin here! if eat what they eat and drink from where they drink the next thing they will have to eat is you.

  • hey dont just eat a plant becouse a animal eats it. you have to have more common sense than that

  • we are animals with instincts and if we are calm we hear them. spend some time alone it the brush and just watch, walk around and see what there is to see. lightly test some things against the skin wait, the lips wait, in the mouth wait, eat a tiny bit wait, and if your truly unsure boil or cook it first. then you'll know if it can go through you. that seems like common sense to me.
