Critical Mass is adhocracy in motion - on cycles.

Each month on the final friday in cities and communities around the world, cyclists and friends (rollerbladers et al.), gather at a usual spot until a 'critical mass' of wheels and owners of those wheels is achieved.

Having reached a 'critical mass' the cyclists then head out for a fun filled evening with no set agendas or pre-determined route.

This video is of the start of the critical mass bike ride was captured as I stood atop the giant dominos art outstallation at the south-east corner of Spadina and Bloor, on Friday evening, September 29, 2006 - the usual CM gathering spot in Toronto which falls within Ward 20/Trinity-Spadina.

Along this CM ride were at least two candidates for city council, myself, candidate for Ward 19, and Desmond Cole, Candidate for Ward 20. Between us, if elected we both would respectively represent the west half and east half of the combined federal/provincial electoral riding of 'Trinity-Spadina'.

In another video captured later in the ride, we hear from Candidate Desmond Cole and his thoughts on cycling.

'Trinity-Spadina' was cut in half to create two wards, 19 and 20, each of which is then represented by a single Toronto city council member.

( I have the November 13, 2006 Election date on my mind, near the end of this video I gaff and say it's November instead of September...and yours truly while pronouncing 'councillor', it winds up sounding like I said 'cancer' whoops! ..and I am promptly corrected by Karen Sun, cycling shotgun to me.)

. . . on with the big bike ride . . . .

  • @Whitegrassairsoft You don't get to decide who counts as a "real" cyclist and who doesn't. Nobody gets to make that call. They have bicycles, they pedal, that make them (us) cyclists. No "real" nonsense about it.

  • Imagine this in Mississauga...

  • Look at it as a protest...

  • So that's an excuse not to obey the rules of the road. interesting.....

  • i dont think the point is to make motorists love cyclists at all. Its to take back 0.0001% of the money we paid in taxes for transportation so we can bike safely on 0.0001% of the roads in toronto for about an hour or two. Also critical mass is after work on fridays. the few dozens cars inconvenienced for a few minutes a month can wait in exchange for the pollution and Co2 they make us breathe the reast of the year. thats the deal.

  • God, mass holes.

Do you think your making motorists love you by making them late for work? You guys make real cyclists look bad.

  • Hey, they're crossing Spadina on a red light!

  • Go CYCLING!!!! Best way to keep fit! ts not only a transport issue, its also an environmental and economical issue!!!!

  • There's well over a hundred on this one.

  • ew,. thats nothing compared to toronto's bmx ride, we had over 100 riders
