Certainly nobody died this day. Cheering for friends that have been riding big waves their entire lives and can hold their breath for 5 min or more. No worries.

Yes they can, Surfline.com just did a piece on Shane Dorian and he was holding his breath for over 5 min. I surf and shoot big waves for a living and hang out with all of these guys at various spots around the World. Breathing techniques are a big part of Big wave surfing. Google "Greg Long almost drowns at cortes bank" and read his story... Heavy stuff.

please explain more about what it feels like to get swallowed up by those waves. and I cant imagine that being tired to your board in such extreme force would break your bones for sure! So how do you get your board back?

Some bones were broke this day and many people have died at this spot. The force of this much water breaking over jagged rocks is only for the very skilled surfer. These guys build up to this over a lifetime of beatings. Cover your head, hold your breath and hope you pop up alive. The board has to be retrieved by the jet ski that towed him into the wave. No leashes in this kind of surf. Thanks for watching! You can buy the full HD 40 min video on my website AZHIAZIAM com

I would love to just sit on one of those jet skis an just watch these monsters rear up from the depths. Also, I heard that a long hold down is 12-15 seconds, any more and there's a serious risk of drowning. Think about it, I can hold my breath for a good minute but put me on a board in head high waves and 3 seconds under water feels like agony.

thank you for the information. I only know what it feels like to swim in baby waves compared to these and I have felt the force of the wave as it took me tumbling under water and spit me out on the beach. I simply can not imagine dealing with force no matter how skilled. I appreciate being able to watch such skill and force of wave for the comfort of my laptop!
