you should definitly have as little movement as possible between hits and learn to relax hand by gently resting it after open tone, this mini rest will allow you to play for hours instead of mins, after some time it will become second nature and you will be happy with the results, keep playing and teaching brutha!

@LazyCats1 Just try moving your thumb out of the way! like above the index finger...a lot of times this happens if you dont have a comfort curve II rim, or the head is really low, best wishes!
