A bhajan is a type of devotional song in the Hindu religion. This video captures the conclusion of my first performance of a bhajan that I learned from my aunt Vandana Katti, an amazing Mumbai-based singer in the North Indian Classical tradition. This particular bhajan is sung in the language of Hindi. Although my rendition of the bhajan begins with my voice and the sound of a drone (just as hers does), it gradually departs from a traditional arrangement and evolves into a jazz-oriented sound with instrumental solos before it ends with a high-energy groove where rock meets trip-hop. Appearing with me are Mahesh Balasooriya (piano), Keven Brennan (clarinet), Enrique Lara (drums), and Geoff Rakness (upright bass).
