Until we escape the feedback loop of unsustainable consumerism... the reality is that job creation occurs when consumers spend money, not when robber barons amass wealth and invest in politicians and legislation to lower their taxes and favor their businesses. Endless exponential growth is a failed paradigm anyway, so why are we even arguing about the drivers of infinite consumption??

On another note, TED curator Chris Anderson is full of it in saying this was not censored, and that is "needlessly partisan" when the issue is ALL ABOUT PARTISANISM! Manipulation of perceptions is the game here, and shame on TED for not allowing an important perspective to be viewed. Anderson's excuse that the talk was rated as mediocre belies the standing ovation at the end of the video.

I wrote a 17 page paper on income inequality a few semesters ago, and he highlights some of the key principles here.

Capitalism is based on consumerism. Purchasing drives the engine, and corporations will always be reticent in job creation.

It's sad that we've had this advice from economists over the past 4 years, and no one listens until the news comes from a member of the wealthy elite. Humans are herd animals.

Thanks for your comment. Plain as day, isn't it? But no one will take as strong a position as this on TV, so the masses don't consider challenging the dogma. I would be grateful to read your paper, I am always looking for more data! even if you want to send me your citations that's cool too. I don't want to steal your work, by any means. lemme know or send me a msg...

won't let me post the link, but google "ted chris 131417405" and you'll see the curator's blog.

supposedly it is too partisan for TED, and the audience voted it as mediocre. see the standing ovation at the end? hmmm.

imagine if he instead used "bad" as every other word in his presentation. I agree the graphs aren't explained well- but he's a businessman trying his best to convey something extremely controversial, which I appreciate.

It's definitely true to say that the economic model we're following today encourages consumption over savings production. That's because we have a central monopoly on the money supply (fed) holding interest rates artificially low, which incentivizes spending over savings & production.

The risks that Wall Street Bankers & politically connected interests are being socialized to the masses, while they reap the benefits privately.

    Socialized Risk. Privatized Profits.

    Corporatism NOT Capitalism.

No one used to pay taxes, so what's your point? Tax all the rich 100% and we can't run our Obama or Bush federal budget. Taxes have to come from the masses. My PhD isn't needed for that simplistic calculation.

yes the rich pay the most tax revenue (duh), but they pay a much smaller portion of their income in taxes than they used to.
