Badaltey Rishtey is a triangular love story borne out of circumstances and occults. A vicious triangle that is destined to destroy the life of all who are part of it. Manohar (Rishi Kapoor) though an orphan is full of life and being a brilliant student still earns while he learns.

His pranks amuse Savitri (Reena Roy) who also earns her living by teaching music to Prema (Rachna Bhatt), Sagar's (Jeetendra) sister. Savitri takes liking for Manohar, while in Sagar heart of hearts, these is only one image and that is the one of Savitri.

Savitri's mother favours sagar, which Savitri clearly rejects. Savitri is disturbed and approaches Manohar disclosing to him her mother wishes. Manohar assures Savitri that he will persuade Colonel Saheb (Pinchoo Kapoor), his God father to take his proposal to her mother.

However fate has something different in store for the lovers, while Manohar meets with an accident, predictions of an astrologer and circumstances lead Savitri to marry Sagar. All seemd fine when the same predictions come to haunt Savitri again when it is announced that her husband would die within forty days of her marriage and she is destined to become widow.

With her lover's life hanging between life and death and her husbands life in great danger, what destiny holds fort Savitri, trapped in a vicious triangle of relationship.
