My first Minecraft diamonds

I've been working on this stairway for a while (Mainly for the amount of stone I get from it), and found them.

The two times I stopped while going down were at other spots where I had found dirt and dug most of it out.
The entrance to the diamonds was gravel,and hating the hell out of gravel,I decided to dig it all out and luckly found them.

Awkward wording is awkward..

I have no clue,just decided to clear all the gravel that happened to be in the area,found the first diamond, and dug around it.
