Here I am with another playthrough, one that I should've done long, long ago...

This time, I run through Vampire Savior, a part of the Darkstalkers series. I'll be playing as Lilith.

Yes, I am well aware that there are other playthroughs of Lilith out there already as opposed to other characters from the game, but I like the lil' succubus. Besides, you can never have enough Lilith. NEVER.

NEVER!

...

The main thing about Vampire Savior: It's fast.
It's not Marvel vs Capcom 2 "blink and you die" fast, but it's still pretty quick compared to other games like Street Fighter and the King of Fighters games barring '03 and XI. The game is very offensive-based, with several types of attacks and tricks to break past defense. I'm a "rush first, think later" kinda guy, so this kind of gameplay is right up my alley.

Part of the game's fast pace is thanks to how rounds work. Instead of the usual "win a round, new round begins with everyone at full health again" routine, you get two lives. When you lose a life, it's the end of a round, but the action doesn't stop. It just acts like you got knocked down like normal, but your health and ONLY your health is fully restored, signifying the start of a new round. The winner of the round keeps the damage they got in the previous round, and the battle continues until one of you loses both their lives. Just think of the fight as one giant round with everyone at 200% health. This was a new thing they added in Vampire Savior; the older Darkstalkers games were more classic with their rounds. An interesting change...I like it.

There's also "white damage". It works similarly to red damage in the _____ vs _____ series: As you take damage, you'll also get a bit of white damage. If you don't take any hits for a while, the white damage will heal at a decent rate, giving you a bit of your health back. If you block a hit (normal or special) or take more damage, the healing stops. When you take chip damage, you also get a bit of white damage, and if the white damage reaches the end of your lifebar, you lose a life. Because of this, battles can either go on forever or last about 30 seconds, usually the latter.

The game has EX moves as well. You know, the more powerful versions of special moves? Here though, they're called "ES Moves", and super moves are the EX Moves. Both types take one powerbar to use save for a couple special cases.
There's also a third type of move for every character, called "Dark Force". These moves buff the user in varying ways, and last for a limited amount of time. These moves also take one powerbar. Yeah, the powerbar is used a lot in this game. No need to worry though since it goes up pretty fast and the max is 99. :P

The characters in the game are all classic monsters from all around the world, but they sure as hell don't fight like 'em. From Frankenstein piledrivers to wolves with nunchucks to a zombie that plays basketball, the cast has lots of weird tricks up their sleeves...or skin...or whatever.
They're all pretty goofy in their own special ways, and their fighting styles are fun and varied. Of course you got your Ryu and your Zangief types, but you've also got some new stuff lodged in there. Chances are you'll find a character or two that you like in here.

This is a two-part playthrough. Not too long, but don't miss the second half.

Enjoy!

  • Hey everyone, Morrigan is my girl, in Marvel VS Capcom. I just got into the world of DarkStalkers and I'd like to know if anyone could recommend fan websites for me to see. People who always report news about DarkStalkers.

Also is there a facebook page i could visit because im starting to feel the love for this series. And yes I would love to see a DarkStalkers 4 :3

  • @TheDevilBreaker Well, for starters, you can go here to learn more about the game: vsav.mizuumi.net

There's not much in terms of Darkstalkers news these days though. Shoruken sometimes posts up new tournament videos from Japan, and you can check out neojinbe's and ukio987's YouTube channels for some high-level Vampire Savior play.

Dunno about any Facebook stuff, though I'm sure it's out there somewhere.

  • Hey PersonDude, hope this doesn't annoy you to be asked... But I loved the song you used for the intro to this video where you described the game and stuff, can you tell me the name? I'd love to have that song in my library.

  • @BassDSXX The song is called "Invitation to the Charm of Darkness". It's from the Darkstalkers OVA.

    Yeah, it's a pretty good song. : )

  • Had Capcom just stuck with the Street FIghter recipe, the Darkstalkers/Vampire games would have been more memorable. When Darkstalkers was brand new in the arcades, basically NO ONE was playing this shit, which is why none of the arcades around the Chicago area ever got the sequels, and no one I knew ever talked about them. Art of Fighting, Killer Instinct, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, and even shitty fuckin Primal Rage were being played more than this. Fuck Darkstalkers, let it die.

  • @dotdotdash2 Darkstalkers would've been dead and buried if it was like Street Fighter. Its uniqueness in its characters and gameplay are what make it memorable to begin with. Your buddies not knowing of it doesn't mean a thing.

The move changes were definitely better, unless you like mashing half-circles to no avail.

A lot of characters' supers aren't meant to do raw damage. They're more like glorified ES moves.

That last bit...damn, what crawled up your ass? You need to work on your temper!

  • @KennyMar Agreed 100%! They should at least have her as a DLC or something. :(

  • @PersonDude Thank you so much for the answer man, got the song, really appreciated :D!
