A group of right-wing demonstrators have been prevented by police from attending an anti-fascist rally where Scotland's political and religious leaders were speaking.

Strathclyde Police confirmed that around 70 Scottish Defence League (SDL) members had met up and held a "static" protest at the corner of Cambridge Street and Sauchiehall Street before being dispersed.

Some of the group were loaded on to buses as part of police plans to ensure there was no threat to public safety.

Police are monitoring the ongoing situation as SDL members have reportedly re-grouped at another location near the city centre.

Around 500 anti-fascist campaigners attended a Scotland United rally in Glasgow Green in response to SDL plans for an "anti-Islamic" march to the citys Central Mosque.

The Glasgow Green rally was attended by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Scottish Tory leader Annabel Goldie and Reverend Ian Galloway.

It was followed by a march through the city centre, culminating in a minute's silence at George Square for victims of racial violence.

Speaking at the rally, Annabel Goldie said: "Just as Scots have settled in every corner of the world, we have over decades welcomed into our communities here those who have come to this country to settle.

"Scotland has been enhanced by that, but there is a shadow which blights us all. It is that small minority in Scotland which engages in racism. Their behaviour is utterly unacceptable. We must unite in condemning it and in condemning anyone or any agency who panders to such repugnant activity.

"Racism is fundamentally at odds with our national values and no group which seeks to turn what may be legitimate political concerns into the scourge of racism has any place in our society.

"We must never waiver when it comes to taking on extremist groups who seek to sow division and feed bigotry.

"Thursday's (Glasgow North East) by-election result is a wake-up call. The BNP do not speak for Glasgow and they will never speak for Scotland or for Britain. But some people voted for them.

"As politicians we must ensure that our arguments are strong and sound and that our policies are relevant and responsible if we are to continue to beat these fascists."

The SDL is an offshoot of the English Defence League which has been involved in confrontations between opponents and police

I just don't get how BNP supporters don't get that not even 10% of muslims in Britian are for these muslim extremist groups. The only reason they get people to believe that the other 90% of muslim are also extremist is because these people are just looking for a quick excuse out of Britian's fanancial crisis, instead of picking up a few books and realizing that it's corporate capitalism that causes ressecion. Here, kinda sounds like what that guy tried to do almost 80 years ago. 1933 anyone?

It's just not mentioned in the mainstream news because it creates major unwanted excuses for extremists to start up again. Extremists are fucking scum but they are a tiny fraction of muslims who believe what they say. It's ashame really for the other 90% of muslims in Britian who are NOT racist and homophobic.

Mate, that's not what the problem with them is. It's the fact that the BNP are too narrow-minded enough to realise that the muslim extremeists are a tiny fraction of muslims in Britian , yet ALL muslims face the conciquences. I agree that ANY extremist groups who want to kill for their ideolitic reasons are wrong, but not every muslim agrees with what muslim extremeists preech. It's ashame for the majority of muslims who HAVEN'T interrupted their holy book literally but still face persecution.
