  • Republican Negron (not on the left, as the sidebar claims):

"the people are sovereign, they run the show"

    Riiiiiight.

That's exaaactly how the statehouse GOP approaches governance. Just ask Ray Sansom. Or Jim Greer & his li'l buddy Delmar. Or Jeff Kottkamp. Or Richard "Culture of Corruption" Crotty"...or...

I think Negron forgot to say "the people who can do something for me are sovereign"

  • The comparison to the ballot initiative passed in St. Pete Beach is also misleading. In the case of St. Pete Beach, the land use issues were put directly to a vote before they went through the public hearing process or were voted on by elected officials and completely circumvented the growth management process mandated by the state

  • If complex tax issues and bond issues can be presented in plain language on a ballot for the electorate, land use issues which affect our quality of life, should not be that difficult to explain.

  • Our elected offficials will still be responsible for considering the validiity of proposed changes to our comprehensive plans. Only those changes approved by those officials would be subject to a vote, at which point, the citizens will have the final say as to whether or not they think their local officials share their vision of how their communities should grow.
