Love it or hate it, bullfighting is one of the most characteristic and essential aspects of Spanish culture. The only national sport associated with blood!
In Spanish "Matador" = the one who kills (and in this case the one who kills bulls in bullfights).
bullfighter = MATADOR or TOREADOR / TORERO (from the verb "torear" = lidiar los toros = to fight bulls)
"Matador" from the verb "Matar" = to kill and this one from the Latin "Mactare" = Sacrifice.
bullfighting / spanish = corrida de toros = tauromaquia = tauromachy from Greek Tauromachia (Tauro = Bull / Machy = Fighting) is a contest of strength, bravery and skills between a man and a beast and it is not a recent phenomenon. Spain has maintained the tradition of bullfighting for ages, introduced and developed bullfighting rules and professional bullfighting equipment usage. it is also performed in Portugal, France, Mexico Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, etc..
The Pros and cons?
is there any honor in killing a defenseless Toro (bull) with an army of bullfighters equipped with armored horses, capas, muletas, swords? Is it sport?
At the beginning of the bullfight, two picadors or lancers on horseback enter the ring and their aim is to pierce the bull's neck with a lance to make the animal lower his head, weakened and slowed.
Professional bullfighting equipment also includes banderrillas, decorated wooden sticks with spiked ends. During the bullfight, banderilleros (older bullfighters that make a part of matador's team) are to insert two banderillas over the horns into the bull's neck muscle.
In the final section of the fight which is the most important stage of the performance, a matador wearing a glorious "traje de luces" (suit of lights) elegantly engages the bull, exchanges the purple and yellow capote (large cape) for the red muleta and curved sword and by using of muleta and sword spectacularly kills the bull (It is also known as Moment of Truth).
Isn't the last part of this presentation a better way of bullfighting? As it used to be in Knossos - Crete, dating from about 2000 BC, performed by male and female acrobats confronting a bull, grabbing its horns as it charges, and vaulting over its back.
Apart from the subject, hope you enjoy my interpretation of Maurice Ravel "Bolero"
Hello Homayoon,
Thank you for another lovely recording! Yes, I agree, bullfighting as an athletic endeavour seems much more entertaining and far less cruel,
Best wishes, SV :)
