  • Oops! Neglected to mention this but trust me you don't want proportional representation. It allows extremists to be swept in to parliament too easily. They will be dangerously powerful in government formation.

Don't do first-past-the-post, but I reccomend Instant runoff voting orthe two round system on supplementary member.

  • @Nebiros21 Well, proportional representation lets in whomever the people people want to get in. If their support lies with extremists, that's who it will be. I don't think the job of an electoral system is to prevent/allow any specific type of candidates/party to get in (extremists, communists, liberals, whatever). I think the job is to create a parliament that reflects the will of the people.

And instant runoff voting is awesome! I kind of wished I'd talked about it in the video!

  • This was so helpful.

  • One caveat, Imagine if Canada was an Indonesian province with the majority being islamic, if you vote for any P other than the national Islamic Party or the Sharia Party, the party you vote for will be a minority (ex: Bloc Canada), BUT if you do vote for a national Party its equaly pointless because your MP will be representing the majority party view not your views. The party system itself is a problem and huge aggregates are not democratic imo, its pointless for Quebec to be ruled by Canada

  • Whoa!!! I like the topic and explanation and words, but please stop with the schizophrenic camera work! It's crazy!! Way too much, changing camera angles every so often is fine, but that much was WAY too much!

  • @Frankdent Well said

  • Really awesome job of explaining the system! I really dislike the system. The voting is split into 308 individual ridings (or regions), each having more than 2 choices to choose from. Therefore, since a lot of the parties are similar, most of the votes are split between them. That's what happened to the Liberals. The NDP and Liberals split the votes and allowed the Conservatives to take down the riding. What I think Canada should do is count all the total votes for each party and they win office

  • @Nebiros21 Sorry again for a typo. I meant OR Supplementary member.

  • I'm doing a powerpoint lecture at my local university on various electoral systems. First-past-the-post is my second least favorite system out of all those out there. You want unfair? Try bloc voting or Plurality at large.

  • I'm exactly the same, I can get so involved into politics around elections and I totally agree. This system works fine in the US where there are only 2 parties but with 5 or 6 for each region, it doesn't work!

Also, I've always found it very odd that we can drive a car and work years before we are allowed to vote. Getting youth accustomed to voting would force politicians to take youth driven issues more seriously instead of only catering to the elderly, who vote most.
