The Hindu god Shiva is the god of creation and destruction, who sustains through his dance the manifold phenomena of the world, unifying all things by immersing them in his rhythm.
He is often portrayed with three faces, in which two opposites are held together by a reconciling third: creator, destroyer and preserver, male, female and androgynous, symbolizing how he transcends the opposition of his contradictory natures.
