"the shit" vs "shit". Kind of like President John F. Kennedy's speech at Berlin when he mistakenly said "…ich bin ein Berliner" rather than "ich bin Berliner", as I understand it, 'ein Berliner' translates roughly to 'a donut' whereas 'Berliner' translates to 'someone from Berlin' or 'Berlin resistant'. 'The shit' is good, 'shit' obviously is bad. It's another silly American idiom, & I'm another silly American who took a foreign language class once & embarrassed himself like a stupid tourist.
