The diversity, the energy, the attitude--all still available 24 hours a day. Since 1991 the tallest building in the United Kingdom has been the 235 metres (771 ft) tall One Canada Square in Canary Wharf, London. Despite this, Shard London Bridge which is under-construction in Southwark, London is expected to reach a height of 310 metres (1,020 ft) in May 2012 and become the tallest building in the European Union. As of November 2010 there are 49 habitable buildings in the United Kingdom at least 100 metres (330 ft) tall, with 38 of these in London alone, and only one outside of England (taking into consideration all under-construction and approved buildings, this figure is set to more than double to 111). The United Kingdom hasn't historically been noted for its abundance of skyscrapers, with the taller structures throughout the country tending to be cathedrals and church spires. Over recent years there has been a boom in the number of proposed and approved for construction skyscrapers in the United Kingdom, particularly in London. As of November 2010 there are four skyscrapers under-construction in the capital that exceed a height of 200 metres (660 ft) which will match the four already in existence.

  • What I love about London is themixture of old and new. We don't wanna flood London with skyscrapers so it ends up looking like some run-of-the-mill US city. We want St Paul's Cathedral and ThePalace of Westminster etc to stand out on the skyline along with the newer buildings.

The Shard is coming along nicely but in a couple of years when The Pinnacle (Bishopsgate Tower) is complete it will look stunning.

There's even a youtube video called Top 10 most visited cities in the world. Paris no.1, London, no.2.

Most cities have their good and bad points, but the "my c***'s bigger than your c***" comparisons are puerile. And the facts don't support it.

  • @MrConstah That's more your opinion than fact. The most visited cities in the world are: 1. Paris (14.8 million visitors), 2. London is 2nd (14.1 million visitors); followed by Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpar, NYC, Dubai, Istanbul, Hong Kong & Shanghai. See factoidz dot com or any number of other sites for references. Many visitors want to see a mix of history & modern. That's what they get with Paris & London. Not just glass spotting. Btw Many of London's visitors are Americans.

  • @TraffordReds9 just saying london doesn't look impressive and I've been there and its boring. Only people in london or from great britian care about its history. the americans and the rest of the world wouldn't give 2 shits about some old ass buildings. the attractions in london are a bridge and some old buildings that nobody cares about. don't take so much pride because u live in london or near it. its not a great city.

  • @MrConstah The pissing-contest of who's got the biggest buildings isn't what I was talking about. The history of a city means far more to me than shoving off a bunch of glass newbies getting in the way of the sky. A city with no culture or history is gonna get boring very quickly. For me, the old - St Paul's, St Pancras, Westminster Abbey etc - is majestic. The new is innovative; a way to complement the old. That's why I like a mixture of the two.

  • @TraffordReds9 i think the modern cities are better because a city like new york can show off how powerful and majestic a country can be. though its good to have old buildings with lots of history i think the uk should improve london's skyline and show off the country.

  • yes Dubai as got more sand and more persons wearing white bed sheets and your point is??? What Dubai doesnt have is culture class history and style. London my friend is one of the top citys in the world . Who needs skyscrapers .

  • @danielpullen hahaha I invite u to visit Dubai,, London Skyscrappers dont even scratch the Surface of what Dubai has done in 7 fucking years. And yes, I have visited Dubai several times and Bankrupt isnt for them what it is for you: Instead of building 1000 structures out of the pocket they are building 500... you cannot even compare. Last summer Sheikhs gave away 800 Billion USD just to continue non priority projects... Cheers mate..

  • @Elex250 except unlike Dubai, London isn't banckrupt

  • compare this shit to Shanghai, or Dubai or New York... London is shit if u compare skyscrapers

  • the beetham tower is looking good
