I remember seeing James Taylor on Saturday Night Live in the 80's.
He sang Shower the People live with his guitar. In the foreground to his right was a reel to reel tape player. The reels did not move at all while he sang until the Shower the people chorus part came. After that part was over it would shut off until the next time that part came around.
I thought it was pretty cool. I was hoping it was on here somewhere, but I can't find it.

I've seen him twice "live" 10-15 years apart, and that reel to reel is part of the show. My thought has always been, that his Wife, Carly Simon was one of the vocalists helping with backup. That was only song I think he does that with, and when you see that tape deck roll out onstage...You know what's coming.

I didn't mean to imply that he was gay. But I also don't think...

Truly one of Elton's best early classics.

It was just a technique that he did as far as the chorus thing goes. He always changes up things in live performances. :D
