Attila The Hun (406-453)
Attila was Khan of the Huns. He is remembered as the epitome of cruelty and rapacity. He passed unhindered through Austria and Germany, across the Rhine into Gaul, plundering and devastating all in his path with a ferocity unparalleled in the records of barbarian invasions and compelling those he overcame to augment his mighty army.
In much of Western Europe, he is remembered as the epitome of cruelty and rapacity. However he is regarded as a hero and his name is revered and used in Hungary, Turkey and other Turkic-speaking countries in Central Asia.
The Huns appeared in Europe at a very convenient time in history when the Western Roman Empire was dying. Attila's campaigns against the Persians failed miserably so he headed toward Europe where there was no one who could fight back. Attila wasn't a military genius, he just attacked defenseless people. Praising Attila for his military ”skills” against the 5th century Romans is like congratulating a street punk for beating up an old crippled Bruce Lee.
