It's not an everyday occurrence that you're going to find Liza Minelli, Gene Hackman, and Burt Reynolds as a ménage a trois, but that's what you get with Lucky Lady, a movie that you'll have trouble finding on DVD unless it's a bootleg copy. Nor was it even released on VHS (in the US, a pal version was released in a few countries) This version was recorded off of HBO Signature by me quite a while back so it isn't the greatest in terms of quality but at least it's a copy of a movie you'll certainly have trouble finding elsewhere.
It's a rather odd movie but is watchable. The main problems with it was that it seemed as if they didn't know whether they wanted to make a comedy romp then in the last third of the movie decided to change into a very bloody gory violent action movie. It seems as if youre watching two different films.
Also on hand in this flick is Robbie Benson as their sidekick or mascot or whatever, and he's certainly one of the best things about this movie.
The movie has been much maligned and was a major box office flop that nearly broke Fox which may explain the lack of a video release. But after 33 years, I think we can look back at it a little more favorably now, although it is still not one would consider particularly good cinema. What you get here also is the studio ending, tacked on because studio executives absolutely hated the original (You can find a synopsis of the original ending at the IMDB under trivia). But if you're interest in all aspects of film making, this is must viewing as a lesson in what can go wrong with a film even if you have a great director (Stanly Donen) and three big (at the time) box office draws

I have the pleaussure to meet one of the famous musician who played in this band, at this picture. He plays the clarinet, he´s mexican, his name Ramón Echeverria del Valle. A great musician.
I've never actually seen this movie, but my father was an extra in it, and we have this old poster from the movie that says "government boat auction" He claims it was given to him. I watch this someday, and see if the poster is in it.
I think many people missed the point of this movie. I've always liked it. Burt Reynolds continues his silly handsome character but it is neutralized by Hackman & Minelli. the movie offers a lot of things ie Adventure, history, gangsters, part-musical. Minelli was excellent as the trash mouth floozy sleeping with Hackman & Reynolds. I like here here better than Cabaret.
