This was the first of the Hoover Compact series that ran from 1982-1986 when it was replaced by a bigger model. It was very basic and lightweight with just 700watts, the Super model in red came with a cord rewind and bag indicator and there was also a 'Total system' with an electric power head and a bigger 1000watt motor. Unfortunately I still haven't found an original hose or tools for mine so i'm using it with the hose and floortool from a later Compact model. It would originally of had a brown double-stretch hose and matching tools, i've managed to find a brown floortool and dusting brush so if anyones got a hose and rods, drop me a line!

  • the motors in the Compact and Sensotronics had quite a unique sound, the Sensotronics are very quiet

  • I still have one of these from 1984 that is still in good working order. I got a new Dyson DC01 in 1999 when I was cleaning out the soot from my attic. The Dyson couldn't cope, the filters kept blocking up with loss of suction, but the S3196 kept going without any problem.

  • the washing machine i think

  • This looks just Like the one that was sold in Canada it was called the spirit

  • Don't waste your time with Dyson and other bagless... Miele are made to work and last on average 15 years. Buy Miele! this post is proof

  • The very very first ones from 1982 were white then in around 1983 they became brown

  • How do you rewind the cord?
