In 1989 and in 1992 both New Years concerts conducted by Carlos Kleiber were IMO the best ever in History (of the VPO). What a musical and elegant approach to the works by the family Strauss. The vienna charme speaks throug every piece. Bravo maestro!!! :D

One of the greatest musicans of our time, M. Pletnev, told me that this was his absolute favorite piece of conducting among all the rest.

Come può esserci qualcuno a cui non piace? DE GUSTIBUS! Questo è il più bel concerto di Capodanno mai ascoltato. C'è tutto lo spirito viennese, c'è la gioia di fare musica, si rivive lo splendore di un'epoca andata. Carlos Kleiber ci dona una struggente nostalgia come nessun altro direttore ha mai fatto in occasione dei concerti di capodanno.Adriano

@trent1280 Answer: no one, as I suspect you know. In fact, the only times he could be happy were when he was on the podium when things went well -- as they most certainly did with this historic concert received so warmly by the audience -- or with his dear children.

This is splendid footage from the original broadcast. Much more here than on the DVD. During the applause at the end (1:38:14-1:42:50), not only does the WPO remain seated during 1 curtain call (1:39:10) so that CK gets all the applause but then, AMAZINGLY, after the WPO leaves the stage (from 1:41:41), the audience continues intense applause and shouting and induces Carlos to come back for another bow (at 1:41:18) on an otherwise EMPTY STAGE! I've never seen that, before or since. BRAVO!!!
