This song was written by Jeff Sibar and Larry Henley. Roger Whittaker was the first to record this song. Many artists have covered this but Bette Midler's cover reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won her a Grammy in 1990.

According to Wikipedia Gary Morris recorded a country version of this in 1983 which made the song a major hit, winning ACM and CMA Song of the Year.

My own personal wee 2 cents, my sister used to play this on the piano over and over, and over again, and I would sing it over and over, and over again. My mom never once complained! We would spend hours creating noise! She is a saint!
