A Tribute - but the question is, what qualified Brian Lenihan to make the decision he took upon himself to make that has ruined Ireland? After all, he was a Barrister - a good one, I'm sure - but he was unqualified to be Finance Minister. He wasn't an accountant, had no experience of economics, and was wrong to believe he had the right to personally (& unilaterally?) take the decision to bail out the banks, bankers and high rollers at the expense of every other man, woman and child in this country and ruin his party in the process.
Nice man, good barrister - hence the tribute - but absolutely bonkers to our detriment. Isn't it time we demanded politicians be qualified to do any job they are 'placed' in as ministers and get rid of the Civil Servants, who are actually doing the work, hiding behind them?

  • I completely agree with that. However, my biggest bone of contention with him was that he appeared to give the impression he alone was deciding to do it.

I learned only today, that he didn't do that. I had thought only Kenny and his cronies were the privileged few to be shown the books (and he looked shattered afterwards) but NO that was only an impression - everyone was invited by Lenihan to see the books including LABOUR now u-turning on all their pre-election promises yet they knew.

  • Points are great; wild views are fantastic, extremism is always to be considered. BUT foul language is not necessary or acceptable in a public forum. Some comments have therefore been removed.

  • Why was the Irish tricolour draped over this man's coffin? I thought that only applied to those who served their country? This man clearly didn't, he served the bankers. I'm not trying to be disrespectful towards the dead, but these are the facts. He did not deserve such an honour.

  • @Butterfield13 But Lenihan signed Ireland up for that by himself. Therefore, Brian Lenihan BANKRUPTED Ireland. The new government simply inherited his tumor.

Only a corrupt, crony voter would expect "pre-election promises" - it leads to moral hazard, corruption and increased austerity. Being under the EU/IMF is a good thing because the Irish are incompetent at running their own affairs without screwing up.

  • He should have stepped down earlier
