エレクトリックベース（electric bass、エレキベースとも）は低音部の撥弦楽器。日本では「エレクトリックベース」とフルで呼ばれる事は少なく、エレキベース、電気ベース、あるいは単にベースと呼ばれ­る。一般的にバンドのパート担当者を紹介する際は「ベース」と表現される。弦は基本的に4本。5本や6本以上のものは多弦ベースと呼ばれることもある。

この項で解説する「エレクトリックベース」とは、「エレクトリックのベースギター (electric bass guitar) のことである。本来「エレクトリックベース」は「電気信号を別個の発音機器に送る低音域用の弦楽器」という意味で、「それ自体に音を発生させる機能がある低音域用の弦楽器­」である「アコースティック・ベース」の対義語である。しかしエレキベースが世に出た当初は他にこのような電気信号式のベースはなかったことから、自然この語はほぼ排他的­に「エレクトリックのベースギター」を指す語となった。

もっとも1960年代まで米国では、「フェンダーベース」という呼称が一般的だった。おそらく、この呼称は初めて量産されたフェンダー社のプレシジョンベース、及びその後­継機種であるジャズベースの流通量の豊富さ、ミュージシャンの使用頻度の高さによるものと思われる。「エレクトリックベース」の呼称は、米国のセッションベーシストである­キャロル・ケイが自著「How to play electric bass」で用いたのが最初といわれる。

また日本語でも英語でも、「ベースギター (bass guitar)」と言うときも通常はこのエレクトリックベースギターのことを指す。

またベース奏者のことを「ベーシスト (Bassist)」と呼ぶ。

今でこそポピュラーな楽器だが、昔は非常に高価な代物でヴァン・ヘイレンのベーシスト、マイケル・アンソニーはエレクトリックギターの1弦と2弦を外してベースの練習をし­ていたという。また、ナイアシンのベーシスト、ビリー・シーンは「(前略)当時ギターよりベースが高価で買えなかったから、ギターでベースラインを弾いていたんだ。」と語­っている。Bassists trying to emulate the sound of a double bass sometimes pluck the strings with their thumb and use palm-muting to create a short, "thumpy" tone. The use of the thumb was acknowledged by early Fender models, which came with a "thumbrest" or "Tug Bar" attached to the pickguard below the strings. Contrary to its name, this was not used to rest the thumb, but to provide leverage while using the thumb to pluck the strings. The thumbrest was moved above the strings in 1970s models and eliminated in the 1980s.
