  • Purley is a hero. The images of him trying to rescue Roger still occasionally haunt me. There were spectators trying to climb the fence to help him but the security wouldn't let anyone past, The marshalls were neither trained nor equipped, nor showed much desire to help, probably out of shock and the injuries they themselves may have received. When Purley died in the plane crash is was a very sad day.

  • A truly remarkable man and although duly decorated he has never received the notoriety he really deserves. A rear man amongst men.

  • @MrDontFuckAbout people died way to often it was about to happen with or without this incident

  • @dude157 When i see the footage there is a moment where after about 2 minutes of trying to save Williamson on his own, Purley's head drops when he realises it's too late - that moment is totally heartbreaking. I can't watch it without welling up.

  • Its so so sad that this incident did spark massive change, to focus on safety more than speed.....

  • Thank you Mr. Purley for restoring my faith in the human race...... that there are (sadly MASSIVELY TOO FEW) people out there willing to help others- risking their own lives to do so. * nb I am in no way undermining those that work EVERYDAY at saving lives, firemen/military/police/etc all at risk for the benefit of others. David Purley was not in any way obligated to help Roger Williamson (RIP) but he did when the damn track workers (AT THE SCENE) didnt an for that he has more heart than most!

  • The Williamson/Purley incident of 1973 haunts F1 to this day.

  • A true hero... May he ever be remembered
