These are actually not rare in smaller suburbs and rural areas. They are rarely seen in cities and bigger suburbs due to light pollution and lack of habitiat. In rural areas and smaller suburbs, they are often seen at lights. When not at lights, they are in trees and low bushes, out of sight. They are moths, meaning they fly only at night, which is why everyone everywhere says they are so rare.
