This excerpt is Virgil playing one of his old "warhorses", The Jig Fugue or "Fugue a la Gigue" on his Rodgers Touring organ affectionately known as "Black Beauty .
I remember Virgil Fox with a great fondness, as my college roommate and her brother, a Curtis organ student, were very deep into the Virgil Fox "Heavy Organ" experience. Bach's music is universal and Virgl Fox's goal was to remind the world of that. I'd love to see someone carry on his legacy; to make the music of Bach, and/or music of the classical world more accessible and desirable to the young.
This May 3, will mark the 100th birthdate of Virgil Fox,,so I want your help to get something done. I pushed hard to get a stamp to commemorate him shortly after he died,,but was told tho he qualified,he needed to be demised a "few years". So he has,SO please contact the Postal company and push to get a Virgil Fox Commemorative stamp. Thank you all very much.I don't like to ask for anyones help, but I do need you!
@gcl82003 I am happy to see Glen Goulds' name in print in your note. He was simply the greatest wasn't he? The last time I saw Glen was at Virgil Fox's last concert at Saint Pauls Bloor Street in Toronto. Glen slipped into the back after the concert started and slipped out at the end of the last encore. He extended his hand to me as he walked quickly past and kindly touched my arm as he passed by. My,,we still miss him so much don't we?
In lookiong over the Virgil Fox Cronology of events I must tell you that one should be aware of errors that would not exist had the authors bothered to ask me. The first performance by me and my Revelation Lights was not in SanDiego, it was in Missoula. The cronology does not inform on all the changes in his Management very well, who he interviewed to take over his concertising, and who he considered to be the best new manager after he disengaged his second last one.
"one of his old warhorses"? seems like a left-handed compliment. NO ONE ever played it better. poor virgil. he was the "mario lanza" of the classical organ world, except his talent and training could not be denied by the "know-it-alls". his "unforgivable sin" (like lanza) was loving the music so much that we wanted to bring it to everyone, including "joe average". isn't it ironic that today, we give the likes of andrea bocelli unrestricted license to do the same thing? think about it...
Merry Christmas everyone,,and thanks for your contacts with me this past year. Keep them comeing. Keep Virgil's torch alive and enjoy the videos with his work that this site provides. Thanks for making it available to everyone.
Blessings. David Snyder Lumierist, Heavy Organ Productions
we have wonderful recordings that are exact in every detail....thats fine...but I am from the Glen Gould perspective on this...lets bring new light on works and have fun engaging with the notes...I am not a fan of Virgil but who could not warm to his enthusiasm and I love the way he chants out B A C H at the end.....a true showman for Bach and the organ
