Rachmaninoff didn't pass this recording for release. Nevertheless, it has its gorgeous moments.

Of all Rachmaninoff's recordings, I think this is the only one that I don't really like. There were some parts that were sublimely beautiful, but some of the pacing just throws it off.
I certainly couldn't do any better, but this one just doesn't do it for me. What I would give to hear Rachmaninoff play the 4th Ballade though...

I love the jazz-like quality at 5:42. It's really quite catchy. And the steady rhythm he picks up after that (which I realized is extremely difficult to do at the pace at which he's playing) is really nice.

I looove this. This is Rach! So romantic and pensive at the same time. How he sings and broods! I have heard stories that Rach disapproved of this recording. Perhaps it was because he was too much himself in this recording. I usually am not crazy about Rach recordings of composers other than himself, but this one is an exception. And his golden tone is beyond words.
I cannot see how this can be bad, and for example J Hofmann's f minor ballade wonderful. Absolutely ravishing. Thank you!
