Shark finning is in the news this week. KQED's science and environment show, QUEST, produced this report about the threat to shark species from finning.

The Farallon Islands are prime habitat for the Great White Shark. Sitting 27 miles off the coast of California, they mark the Western tip of an area scientists call the "red triangle." QUEST ventures out to meet the Great White shark and discover that the creature of our imaginations may not be the monster we think it is. See why scientists are tracking the movements of these magnificent animals in hopes of protecting them.

  • Humans are the real killing machine.

  • Conspicuously, White sharks do not attack humans in the manner Dr. McCosker describes ambush attacks on pinnipeds. How does that give credence to "mistaken identity" theory? There is no evidence of the latter whatsoever.

  • There is some awesome research underway for the past 20 years in Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary as well that is conducted by the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation which is also a TOPP team contributor.
