I love how you render that first and third scene in that video...is that toon in maya? or something preset? how did you do it?

That's very easy. There's 3 render pass. The first is plain color, the second is a white shader with self-shadows and a STRONG light, and the third is traced shadows. Just mix'em all within after effect :]
