This song is about the first socialist in Dutch Parliament, Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis. The text is about the undying ideals of Domela, his character as a person and the massive support for him by the Dutch people.
The picture in the beginning and at the end are of a statue of Domela in the heart of Amsterdam.
Ferdinand Domela Nieuwenhuis (Amsterdam 1846 - Hilversum 1919), was called 'Us Ferlosser' (our saviour) and 'the apostle of the workers' was in the history of the labor movement for years disputed. Especially the Social Democrats saw him as a leader and a figure drifting 'in decline'. However, his importance for the beginning of socialism in The Netherlands is undisputed. After formation of the Social Democratic Union, he became one of the leading figures. Domela came in 1888 as the first social democrat in Dutch Parliament. He was a dedicated parliamentarian. As a loner, he had no enviable position, and that helps explain his later dislike of parliamentary work.
Domela Nieuwenhuis came increasingly under the influence of anarchism, although he was initially against it. He wanted MPs and revolutionaries worked together. After the founding of the Socialdemocratic Workers Party, the forerunner of the Labour Party, the split between the two became a fact. Domela from 1898 was definitely an anarchist. If socialism is through the covenant of the state via the parliament, according to him it would become enslaved. As a consistent anarchist, he pointed down any organization. Outside the anarchist movement Domela was little heard from again. His continuing popularity proved to be at his funeral in 1919 when tens of thousands of people in Amsterdam payed their last respects.
Fantasties.
