In September, 2009 we embarked on a fantastic road trip through eleven Western states. Down the north coast of California, across to the Sierras (Yosemite and Sequoia), pit stop in Las Vegas, then on to the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest, Canyon de Chelly, Mesa Verde (Colorado), Monument Valley, Arches Ntl. Park, Canyonlands, Bryce Canyon, and Zion Ntl Park. By Lake Powell we went to magical Antelope Canyon, saw the sunset at Horseshoe Bend and spent a day hiking through narrow Wire Pass to Buckskin Gulch. Autumn was glorious in the Grand Tetons and the forest fire which closed most of Yellowstone didn't impede our view of geyser basin, the biggest collection of geysers in the world. Got home to Vancouver in time to see the new Ken Burns series on the National Parks of America - and I would agree - they really are the best idea which came from our neighbor down south. They are smartly managed and accessible gems of this planet.
Music Score: Grantchester Meadows (Pink Floyd) from "Ummagumma" (1969). Come In Number 51, Your Time is Up (PInk Floyd) from "Zabriskie Point" (1970). Love Song (Jerry Garcia) from "Zabriskie Point" (1970). Carl Ferris jamming on Fremont Street. American Pie (Don McLean 1972). On the Trail (Ferde Grofe) from his "Grand Canyon Suite" (1931). Heart Beat, Pig Meat (Pink Floyd) from "Zabriskie Point" (1970)

  • Hi Pierre

I'm in Hungary with my wife Ottilia. Yes! What a great trip in the US. Forget the politics which can talk about ad naseaum. What a wonderfully beautiful country. Oh, we were in London, Cambridge and Oxford for a week in early November.

  • Great work! glad you went into Grand Canyon - I've been to the bottom there, De Chelly (that day hike is only 4 hrs in/out, -beautiful cottonwood forests follow the shallow De Shelly R.) - and Black Canyon of the Gunnison, Colorado (steepest trail in no. America).. you can't get a real feeling for these river canyons unless you hike down to the river and the cottonwood forests along the banks..

sunsets from rim of Canyon de Chelly are the best I saw in the desert.. Glad you like Henry Miller!

  • Thanks. If only the idea behind the National Park system - sustainability of what is precious - were applied to the world at large I think we would be a happier planet. Sounds pedestrian but a great truth is usually a simple one. Aside from that my wife is Hungarian born, a country with an unhappy past, and she was blown away by the variation.
