Asylum of Spoons - Trailer (2005)
The following is an excerpt of the original film. Asylum of Spoons is a chilling and evocative film adaptation of the original stage work by Kaeja dDance, which premiered at the Canada Dance Festival in June 2004.
Award-winning choreographer Allen Kaeja articulates a chilling and evocative contemporary dance narrative that chronicles the extraordinary dynamics, impulsive acts, unspoken desires and gripping love of a truly eccentric family.
Asylum of Spoons plays with a turn-of-the-century aesthetic and follows a dominant Matriarch through her great manor as she strives to attain absolute control. The viewer witnesses the familys sacrifice of freedom and sanity in exchange for their desperate cravings of safety, intimacy and need for sanctuary. We are impacted by the realization that the Matriarchs efforts to attain their unconditional love must come at a cost. Asylum of Spoons challenges our inherent need for familial love against all odds.
Thousands of stainless steel spoons permeate Asylum of Spoons, serving as poignant metaphors for glittering instruments of currency, bait, jewelry, enforcement, passion and antagonism. These objects of desire establish the conflicts and hierarchies within the family, driven by Kaejas trademark athleticism and award-winning choreography.
Kaeja dDances exceptional performers, led by Karen Kaejas mesmerizing performance as the domineering Matriarch, propel Asylum of Spoons, evoking hunger, tender anguish, bizarre humour and gripping love. Asylum of Spoons is a compelling, imagistic narrative of contemporary dance, beautifully captured with stunning cinematography.
In their eighth film collaboration, the artistically acclaimed, Gemini-nominated team of Mark Adam and Allen Kaeja reveal their passionate visions in Asylum of Spoons. Asylum of Spoons has been screened at festivals and on television around the globe, receiving awards and recognition including Best Performance Nomination & Short Listed for Jury Special Mention (Banff Television Awards) and Playback Best Canadian Award Nomination (Banff World Television Festival).
