@kcin1004 Yes. He was 'discovered' playing anonymously in a basement club. The discoverer was a German officer -not the SS - who loved the Nazi-forbidden black music etc.,- knew who he was from recordings, and somehow kept him safe.

does anyone know anything about his protection from the nazis? being gypsy, he was in danger of getting killed. i always found it very interesting.
